Botox vs. Dysport: Why We Chose Dysport at Skin+

Botox vs. Dysport: Why We Chose Dysport at Skin+

If you've been thinking about trying Botox or Dysport, you've probably wondered what the difference is. Both are popular injectable treatments used to soften fine lines, prevent deeper expression lines, and create a more youthful appearance.

With the expansion of medical aesthetics at Skin+, I'm excited to introduce Dysport injections to our treatment options.

After discussing the different cosmetic injectables with our Nurse Practitioner, we decided to start with Dysport. She especially likes it for younger patients who want natural-looking results without feeling overly frozen.

And here's something else I'm excited about: researchers are studying botulinum toxin for enlarged pores, oily skin, and uneven texture!

Let's talk about the key differences between Botox and Dysport, how they work, and why we chose Dysport at Skin+.

What Are Botox and Dysport?

Botox Cosmetic and Dysport are injectable neuromodulators made from botulinum toxin type A.

Both products work in similar ways by temporarily blocking nerve signals to specific muscles responsible for facial expressions.

Every time you smile, squint, frown, or raise your eyebrows, your facial muscles contract. Over time, these repeated muscle contractions contribute to the appearance of facial wrinkles.

By reducing muscle activity, botulinum toxin injections help soften the appearance of dynamic wrinkles, giving the skin a smoother appearance.

Although both contain a form of the same active ingredient, their formulations and dosing systems differ.

Both have FDA approval for cosmetic use to improve moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows, known as glabellar lines. Botox also has FDA approval for additional cosmetic treatment areas.

Botox vs. Dysport: What Are the Main Differences?

There are several subtle differences between these cosmetic treatments worth understanding.

1. Dysport May Start Working Faster

One reason patients love Dysport is its relatively quick onset time.

Some patients begin noticing improvements within 2-3 days following Dysport treatments.

With Botox injections, patients commonly begin seeing changes within 3-7 days.

These timelines vary, and full results are generally evaluated around two weeks after treatment.

2. Dysport Can Create Beautiful, Natural-Looking Results

This is one of the biggest reasons our Nurse Practitioner enjoys working with Dysport.

For younger patients beginning preventative injectable treatments, she appreciates the soft, natural appearance she can achieve.

The goal isn't necessarily to eliminate every bit of muscle movement.

We want you to smile, laugh, and express yourself while reducing repetitive movements that contribute to wrinkles.

Both Botox and Dysport can achieve natural-looking results. Your provider's technique, understanding of facial anatomy, and appropriate dosing are what make the biggest difference.

3. Dysport and Larger Treatment Areas

Another commonly discussed difference involves how these products distribute within the treated area.

Dysport is sometimes described as offering broader coverage, particularly when treating larger areas such as the forehead.

However, actual distribution depends on dosage, injection site, technique, and individual facial anatomy.

Common treatment areas include:

  • Forehead lines
  • Glabellar lines between the eyebrows
  • Crow's feet around the eyes
  • Selected lip lines and other expression lines

Some of these applications are off-label for Dysport and require an individualized medical assessment.

How Many Units of Dysport Equal Botox?

This is probably one of the most confusing parts of comparing these products.

Dysport units and Botox units are measured differently.

You may hear people compare one unit of Botox with approximately three units of Dysport. However, there is no FDA-approved conversion ratio.

For example, the labeled treatment for glabellar lines uses 20 units of Botox or 50 units of Dysport.

The number of units of Dysport needed depends on muscle strength, facial anatomy, and treatment goals.

When comparing total cost, consider the complete treatment rather than simply the price per unit.

More Dysport units don't automatically mean a stronger or more expensive treatment.

How Long Does Dysport Last?

For many patients, wrinkle reduction lasts approximately 3-4 months.

The duration of results depends on individual metabolism, muscle activity, dosage, and the specific areas treated.

Some patients experience longer-lasting improvements, while others notice muscle movement returning sooner.

As the product gradually wears off, normal muscle contractions return.

Regular treatments may help maintain smoother skin, although your recommended schedule should reflect your unique needs.

Is Dysport Better for Younger Patients?

You don't have to wait until you develop deep wrinkles to consider injectable treatments.

Younger adults often begin exploring treatment when they notice forehead lines, crow's feet, or vertical lines developing between their eyebrows.

Our Nurse Practitioner frequently prefers Dysport for younger patients because she likes the softer aesthetic she can achieve with it.

The best results come from selecting an appropriate dose based on your facial anatomy and aesthetic goals.

Sometimes that means treating conservatively and preserving more natural muscle movement.

Dysport Microneedling for Enlarged Pores and Uneven Skin Texture

Here's something you might find surprising: researchers are exploring botulinum toxin for concerns beyond wrinkles, including excessive oil production, enlarged-looking pores, and uneven skin texture.

If you've struggled with acne-prone skin, you know how frustrating these concerns can be, especially after finally getting your breakouts under control.

As I explain in my blog Acne Isn't Cured, It's Managed, managing acne is an ongoing process. Once those breakouts are controlled, we can begin addressing the concerns acne may have left behind.

At Skin+, we've introduced Neuromodulator Microneedling, which combines professional microneedling with a Dysport-based treatment approach.

Microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries that stimulate collagen production and help improve uneven texture and certain acne scars.

I explain the process in more detail in my blog Microneedling for Acne Scars: The Next Step After Clear Skin.

Researchers are investigating whether adding botulinum toxin may provide additional benefits for oily skin and visible pores.

What Does the Research Say?

A fascinating 2023 clinical study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology examined 20 patients with enlarged facial pores and oily skin.

Researchers compared intradermal botulinum toxin injections on one side of the face with topical botulinum toxin application following microneedling on the other.

Both approaches improved the appearance of enlarged pores, although injections demonstrated better longevity and patient satisfaction.

These findings are promising, particularly for patients concerned about oily skin and texture.

However, the research remains limited. These studies have not established the safety or effectiveness of Dysport specifically delivered through microneedling. This combination is an off-label approach, and the FDA has not cleared microneedling devices for delivering drugs into the skin.

Is Neuromodulator Microneedling Right for Acne-Prone Skin?

I'm particularly interested in this emerging area because so many Skin+ clients work incredibly hard to clear their acne, only to struggle with enlarged-looking pores and uneven skin texture.

One thing I always explain is that non-inflamed acne and clogged pores can sometimes look like rough skin texture. It's important to identify what's actually causing the bumps before choosing a treatment.

We also need to distinguish enlarged pores from true acne scars. If you've ever wondered whether you're dealing with discoloration or scarring, read my blog on acne scars versus post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

For deeper scars, treatments like TCA CROSS for acne scars may be more appropriate.

Our priority is always getting active acne under control before considering advanced corrective treatments.

What About Safety and Recovery Time?

Both Botox and Dysport are prescription medications requiring appropriate medical evaluation.

Most injection appointments are quick, with minimal recovery time.

Temporary redness, swelling, bruising, or discomfort at the injection site can occur.

Potential complications include eyelid drooping and muscle weakness. Rare but serious side effects include difficulty swallowing, speaking, or breathing, which require immediate medical attention.

Your provider should review your medical history, medications, and relevant medical conditions before treatment.

Botulinum toxin also has medical applications for muscle spasms, certain neurological disorders, and excessive sweating, although those treatments involve separate medical indications.

If you're considering treatment, consult a qualified medical professional, such as an appropriately trained Nurse Practitioner, board-certified dermatologist, or plastic surgeon.
