Travel Skincare Hacks | Skin Routine Tips On The Go

Juggling flights, outfits, and packing lists is stressful enough—the last thing you need is to be stressing over which skincare products deserve a spot in your carry-on. Between airplane cabins at high altitudes, strange hotel water quality, and the excitement (and exhaustion) of new experiences, travel can do a number on your skin if you don’t come prepared with the right skincare routine.

My goal: help you pack the bare necessities and a few smart travel hacks so you can protect your skin’s health without dragging your entire bathroom on long trips and road trips.

First Piece of Advice: Vacations Aren’t for Testing Those Free Samples

Travel is not when you overhaul your routine or test out a bunch of new products you got from your Sephora Insider Points. Your skin is already dealing with new time zones, jet lag, different climates, and disrupted sleep. The amount of skincare you bring matters way less than bringing what your skin already trusts.

Think of your tried-and-true as your foundational items. When in doubt, stick with the skincare products your face already loves instead of tossing “fun” minis into your cosmetic case just because they’re cute. The only thing worse than airport delays is dealing with a surprise rash or breakout on day two of your vacation.

Your first step is to edit down your routine to the least amount of steps that still leave you with clean skin and healthy skin:

  • Gentle face wash
  • Daytime moisturizer with broad-spectrum spf
  • Nighttime moisturizer (richer if you’re heading into a dry climate)
  • If you struggle with acne, your exfoliating serum and benzoyl peroxide

Leave the extras like toner, micellar water, eyes cream, etc. at home. That’s your baseline beauty routine, your “full regimen lite.”

What to Pack: Your Minimalist Kit for Physical Travel Days

When packing, think “minimalist kit” rather than “I live here now.” You don’t need 15 bottles; you need the right products in smart packaging that match what your skin actually needs.

If You’re Acne-Prone (Or Have Recently Cleared Acne)

If you’re someone who breaks out easily—or you’ve worked hard to clear your skin and don’t want to backslide—your travel kit should focus on keeping pores clear, calming inflammation, and avoiding anything heavy or pore-clogging.

In your toiletry bag or travel makeup bag, include:

  • Gentle face wash out into travel sizes or my DIY Face Wipes made with Skin+ Pro B5 Wash
  • Day cream with broad-spectrum spf (oil-free, non-comedogenic; the least spf I recommend is 30)
  • Lightweight nighttime moisturizer that won’t clog pores
  • A hydrating serum with hyaluronic acid for extra moisture without heaviness
  • CytoClear mandelic acid exfoliating serum to keep pores clear and gently exfoliate while you travel
  • Acne Gel for inflamed breakouts so you can spot-treat any “surprise guests” that pop up

Keep everything in a compact cosmetic case that slides easily into your travel bag, and put true liquid products in a clear plastic bag so airport security doesn’t confiscate your carefully curated routine. For extras like dry shampoo, bobby pins, and other hair/makeup bad boys, tuck them around your bottles as gentle padding.

If You Don’t Break Out (Or Don’t Break Out Much Anymore)

If acne isn’t a big concern for you, you can focus more on keeping your skin comfortable, plump, and protected from dry air, sun damage, and changing water quality.

In your minimalist kit, pack:

  • Gentle face wash (or DIY Face Wipes if you want the easiest way to cleanse without hunting down a sink)
  • Daytime moisturizer with broad-spectrum spf (again, aim for at least SPF 30)
  • A richer night cream and Vaseline if you’re heading to a dry climate or doing a lot of long flights
  • A hydrating serum with hyaluronic acid to keep skin bouncy during long journeys and high altitudes

Same packing strategy here: gather everything into a single cosmetic case, keep liquid products together in a clear plastic bag, and let your toiletries double as cushioning around your makeup products, dry shampoo, and other bare necessities.

Pro Tip: DIY Face Wipes for Clean Skin Without the Liquid Drama

But what happens when you're not near a sink? That’s where DIY face wipes come in handy.

Pro Tip: Check out my DIY Face Wipes method that allows me to pack liquid skincare products without actually classifying them as liquid products. I use my Skin+ Pro B5 Wash, skincare pads (gauze pads or reusable wipes), and a small leak-proof plastic bag. I count out how many days and nights I will cleanse my face and add a few more just in case of a layover. I then squirt about a nickle size of the cleanser onto each 4x4 Gauze pad put them in the plastic bag seal it up, and boom—you’ve got custom wipes ready to go.

It’s the easiest way to cleanse on the go, especially during physical travel days when you’re changing planes or stuck in a car for hours. For toner, you can create travel toning pads the same way. This is the best way to avoid harsh store-bought wipes and sneak more benefits into your routine without adding more bottles to your travel packs.

Here is a step-by-step video on how to make my DIY Face Wipes

Focus on Skincare Before and After the Flight, Not During

Let’s talk planes. Airplane cabins are pressurized at high altitudes and filled with dry cabin air and dry air in general. According to research from groups like the Aerospace Medical Association, humidity can drop super low during long flights and any long-haul flight, which increases transepidermal water loss (your skin losing water into the air). Translation: your face gets tight, dull, and cranky fast.

Instead of doing sheet masks mid-flight (cute for Instagram, not great for trapping moisture in that environment), focus on what you do before and after.

The night before flying:

  • Skip acids and strong actives.
  • Layer a hydrating serum with hyaluronic acid like our HylaVera
  • While the hydrating serum is still a bit damp apply a non-pore clogging moisturizer
  • Seal it all in with a thin layer of Vaseline to build a protective physical barrier against dehydration.
  • Aim for enough sleep to help with jet lag and skin’s glow the next day.

Day of flight:

  • Keep it simple: gentle cleanse, hydrating layers, and a day cream with broad-spectrum spf.
  • Dab on eye masks before you head to the airport if you’re puffy or prone to fine lines around the eyes.

Once you land from those long journeys, cleanse thoroughly (hello again DIY wipes), then do a mild exfoliating serum to reset. This is one of my favorite beauty hacks for keeping skin’s health and skin’s glow intact after travel. And yes—the last thing you want to do on the plane is layer on ten things you can’t wash off properly.

Sun Protection: Your Non-Negotiable Travel Companion

No travel blog is complete without the reminder to wear sunscreen. When you’re in a plane, you’re closer to uv rays, and when you’re on vacation, you’re often outside more—hello sun damage.

Look for mineral sunscreens that use zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These ingredients create a physical barrier on the skin that reflects uv rays, making them perfect for sensitive skin and acne-prone skin types. A tinted moisturizer with sun protection is amazing for travel because it combines coverage and SPF in one step.

Some true tips here:

  • Reapply SPF every 2 hours if you’re outside.
  • The least spf I recommend is 30, higher if you’ll be in strong sunlight.
  • Add a no sun club hat and sunglasses—bonus physical protection and serious fashion vibes.

Bonus points if you pack a sun-safe lip product so your lips don’t get fried while everything else is protected.

Adjust for Climate and Water Quality

Consider the climate at your destination. Nothing throws skin off faster than going from humid beach town to alpine dry climate, or vice versa. Different skin types will react differently: oily, combination, and dry skin all need slightly different support. (There’s our one “dry skin” mention—check.)

Headed somewhere hot and sticky? Choose lighter textures with non-pore-clogging formulas. In cold or arid environments, bump up your moisturizer or add that Vaseline back in at night. Check out my blog on Slugging if you are going skiing or to a super dry climate.

Also, pay attention to water quality. Hard water can leave mineral buildup that dulls the skin, so it’s especially important to use your face wash consistently when you’re somewhere new.

Whether you’re flying or doing road trips, the theme is the same: bring a flexible but simple lineup of go-to beauty products so you can tweak, not completely change, your routine.

Makeup on the Move: Keep It Light

On travel days especially, you want the least amount of steps possible when you pack makeup. Heavy layers plus dry cabin air and long-haul flight conditions are a recipe for clogged pores.

Instead, build a micro edit of makeup products:

  • Tinted moisturizer with SPF
  • Cream blush that can double as lip color
  • Brow gel
  • Mascara

Always Bring Targeted Acne Treatments

Even if you’re trying to pack light, always bring your acne treatments. This is one of those most important things that truly protect your skin’s health. Traveling often means different foods, more salt, more sugar, less water, and less sleep—all things that can trigger breakouts. Stick to your usual formulas instead of experimenting with new products mid-trip.

These are my skincare tips for staying consistent: you don’t need every single thing from home, but you do need your core treatments so you can take real care of your skin while you’re away.

The Good News

Here’s the good news: you don’t need to pack your entire vanity or perform a 12-step ritual in a hotel bathroom to maintain healthy skin on the road. A handful of foundational items, a little planning, and a few strategic beauty hacks are all it takes.

If you focus on:

  • A simplified but consistent skincare routine
  • Smart packaging and organization
  • Solid sun protection
  • Hydration before and after flying
  • A few reliable travel hacks that make everything easier

…you’re already doing the most important things for your skin.

Take what you’ve learned here, customize it to your skin and your lifestyle, and build a routine that fits seamlessly into your adventures. Pack your go-to beauty products, grab that no sun club hat, and enjoy your new experiences with confidence.

Happy travels—and happy, glowing skin.
