If you spend any time on tiktok, make no mistake, the “retinol sandwich method” is everywhere right now. In the world of skincare, creators are layering creams and serums and promising zero irritation with all the powerful benefits of retinol. The basic idea is simple: you buffer your retinol product with layers of moisturizer so it’s not in such intense direct contact with your skin, which can be a good thing when your skin is feeling touchy.
At Skin+, we’ve actually been using our own twist on this skincare hack for years with acne-prone skin. We call it the HylaVera Sandwich, and it’s an effective strategy not just for retinol beginners, but also for anyone whose skin is feeling dry, windburned, or over-exfoliated.

Why the world of retinol is both magical and tricky
Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A, a true powerhouse ingredient and one of the most celebrated ingredients in the world of retinol and anti-aging. With consistent retinol use, it can boost collagen production, soften fine lines, speed up skin cell turnover, and help with brown spots, sun damage, and uneven skin tone.
Whether you’re using a gentle retinol serum, a stronger form like prescription retinoids, or pure retinoic acid, this superstar ingredient can deliver remarkable results and skin-smoothing properties of retinol for both anti-aging and acne.
But every skincare expert and board-certified dermatologist will tell you: these powerful anti-aging and acne-fighting benefits come with potential side effects. The wrong type of retinoid, the wrong strength, or the wrong retinol application can lead to harsh irritation, excess dryness, and a compromised skin barrier—especially for sensitive skin types, dry skin types, or acne-prone skin that’s already inflamed.
Â
Enter the HylaVera Sandwich: our acne-friendly retinol sandwich technique
The retinol sandwich technique was originally designed to cushion the active ingredient with moisturizer. Our HylaVera Sandwich follows the same logic, but it’s tailored to real-life acne-prone and oilier skin types.
Instead of using a heavy cream, we use a thin, hydrating serum-gel with hyaluronic acid—our HylaVera Gel—as the “bread” around your active. That extra layer of hydration helps protect the skin barrier without clogging pores.
We use this skincare method in two main situations:
- A client can’t quite tolerate an active ingredient like CytoClear (mandelic acid) or Daily A (retinol serum) just yet.
- A client has pushed their skincare routine too hard—maybe benzoyl peroxide, exfoliants, cold wind, or other skincare products have left them tight, flaky, or stinging.
Instead of stopping all treatment, we add a bit of personalization and buffer the active for a couple of weeks using the HylaVera Sandwich so you still get progress, but with fewer harsh side effects.

How to build a HylaVera Sandwich (the right way)
Here’s how this skincare routine looks step-by-step.
First step: cleanse gently
Remove makeup, sunscreen, and oil without stripping.
Step two: apply the first layer of moisturizer
On clean, slightly damp skin, apply a thin layer of moisturizer—this is your first layer of moisturizer in the sandwich. With HylaVera, that means a light, hydrating serum texture packed with aloe and hyaluronic acid for extra hydration without heaviness.
This thin layer of moisturizer creates a protective barrier between your skin cells and the active ingredient. It slightly dilutes penetration, which is exactly what we want when we’re preventing potential irritation.
Step three: active goes on top
Next, apply your active: the recommended amount of retinol product like Daily A, or an exfoliating serum such as CytoClear, depending on the plan your skincare expert gave you. For acne routines that include benzoyl peroxide, we may also use the sandwich on treatment nights where irritation is creeping in.
Keep retinol application away from the corners of the nose, mouth, and eyes—those areas tend to get the harshest irritation and potential side effects.
Step four: second layer of moisturizer
Finish with your second layer of moisturizer—another light layer of HylaVera Gel. These layers of moisturizer seal everything in, add an extra layer of hydration, and give your skin cells a calmer, slower release of the active.
For oilier skin types, we often keep both layers very thin. For more reactive or dry skin types, we can add a little more HylaVera in that final layer, or even pair it with a separate hydrating serum underneath for truly powerful benefits with less risk.
Whether you’re a skincare enthusiast or someone who just wants simple instructions, this method keeps your routine clear and easy to follow.

Who the HylaVera Sandwich is perfect for
This method is ideal for:
- Retinol beginners who are nervous about harsh side effects
- Sensitive skin types who still want the powerful anti-aging perks
- Acne-prone skin that needs treatment but freaks out with direct contact from strong actives
- Anyone recovering from a peel, sun damage, windburn, or over-exfoliation
In recent years, the retinol sandwich method has gotten a lot of attention because it lets people enjoy the benefits of retinol with fewer flakes and less redness. For my clients, the HylaVera Sandwich has become the star of the show when we’re ramping up routines slowly and safely.
Â
Can the sandwich slow you down?
You might be wondering if buffering your active will block results. Yes, using a sandwich can slightly slow how quickly you see changes—but it often improves your ability to stick with the routine long enough to reach optimal results.

Press pause on vitamin C while your skin adjusts
If you’re needing the HylaVera Sandwich to ease into an active serum, it’s usually a sign your skin is feeling a bit vulnerable. During this phase, I recommend pressing pause on vitamin C serums. While vitamin C can be amazing for brightening and sun damage in the long run, it’s still an active ingredient—and for many sensitive or overworked skin barriers, it adds one more layer of potential irritation on top of your retinol use or exfoliating serums.
This doesn’t mean you’ll never use vitamin C again. It just means: first focus on getting comfortable with your main active using the HylaVera Sandwich, keeping the rest of your routine simple, hydrating, and boring in the best way. Once your skin is tolerating your active without stinging, burning, or excess dryness, you and your skincare expert can decide when and how to slowly reintroduce a vitamin C serum for extra brightening support.
The HylaVera Sandwich takes the trendy retinol sandwich technique and turns it into something your acne-prone skin can actually live with. With a little structure and a bit of personalization, you get the skin-smoothing properties of retinol, fewer freak-outs, and a routine you can stick with long enough to see real, remarkable results.
